Marcel ESCOFFIER (French, Monte-Carlo 1910 - 2001 Ariccia)

Marcel ESCOFFIER is a French costume designer, by his full name Marcel Delphin ESCOFFIER, born in Monte-Carlo (Monaco) on November 29, 1910, died in Ariccia (Italy) on January 9, 2001. After studying Decorative Arts in Paris, Marcel ESCOFFIER started as an assistant decorator at the cinema in 1938. In 1945, he assisted Christian BERARD on "La Belle et la BĂȘte" (released in 1946) by Jean COCTEAU. If he mainly collaborates on French films (in addition to COCTEAU, by Jean DELANNOY, Christian-Jaque, Jean BOYER, among others), he also contributes to Italian films (or Italian and Spanish co-productions), including "Senso" by Luchino VISCONTI, in 1954. After forty films, the last in 1974, his final work on screen is for television (the only time), with Franco ZEFFIRELLI's "Jesus of Nazareth" (1977) telesuite. During his career, Marcel ESCOFFIER is also a costume designer in the theater (in France especially, but also twice for the New York scene, on Broadway) and in the opera (where he collaborates in particular with ZEFFIRELLI, Herbert von KARAJAN, Maria CALLAS)
