Niclas Hans THOMSON (Swedish, Malmö 1793 - 1874)

Niclas (Niklas) Hans THOMSON, born in 1793 in Malmö and died in 1874, was a Swedish bookseller, librarian, publisher, author and translator. THOMSON started in Malmö as a loan librarian and a publisher. In 1831 he moved to Stockholm and established a printing company, later transformed into an editing house. In 1835 he began to publish the “Kabinets Biblioteket'' (the Cabinet Library) of the latest literature, which with its continuation Nytt “Cabinets Bibliothek” (the New Cabinet Library) became his most successful publishing product. In the two series, a total of 119 titles were published. Three quarters of these publications were translations, and the translators were never mentioned. THOMSON translated others’ writings himself, from German and Danish and (to a lesser extent) French and English. He was also the author of some works, for example “Konskriptionen eller Ludvig och Marie: en berättelse från södra delen af Sverige” (The conscription or Ludvig and Marie: a story from the southern part of Sweden), 1834. In 1850, he ceased his publishing business and returned to Malmö, where he again worked as a loan librarian.
