La Toison d'or (Russian, 1906 - 1909)

La Toison d’or [Золотое руно; Golden Fleece] was a monthly art and literature review published in Moscow in 1906 – 1909 by Nikolai RYABUSHINSKY (1877 - 1951), Russian painter, merchant and philanthropist. It was published at a high artistic and printing level and was famous for its illustrations made by major Russian and foreign artists (Leon BAKST, Mikhail VRUBEL, Eugene LANSERE, Konstantin SOMOV and others). The literary part collaborated with Alexander BLOK, Konstantin BALMONT, Fedor SOLOGUB, Nikolai MINSKY, Maximilian VOLOSHIN, Ivan BUNIN, Valeryi BRUSOV, Andrey BELY, Leonid ANDREEV, Zinaida GIPPIUS, Mikhail KUZMIN, the French poet Alexander MERCEREAU and many others. The review organized several art exhibitions, including the "Salon of the Golden Fleece" in 1908 known as the biggest world display of French contemporary art in the beginning of the 20th century. All the French artistic trends of the last decades and the present moment were shown (the Impressionists, the Post-Impressionists, the pioneers of Cubism etc). The highest artistic level of the periodical demanded huge expenses and brought high losses, that finally led to its end.
