Cheramy (American, 1921 - 1965)

An American subsidiary of Houbigant (French perfume manufacturer), launched in August 1921, and disappeared around 1965. Cheramy is often mistaken for being French, but while its origins had a definite French influence it was an American business, under the direction of Frank J. M. MILES, a perfumer and chemist. Cheramy’s early years have been very productive. MILES trademarked a large number of perfume lines all of which he claimed had been in use since 1921. By 1925, Frank MILES criss-crossed the Atlantic with plans to both establish a retail shop in Paris and also to manufacture Cheramy products in Houbigant’s upgraded factory at Neuilly. Cheramy’s Paris shop opened in 1926 at 308 Rue St Honoré with the distinctive Cheramy logo prominently displayed in the shop entrance. The packaging of products, especially powders, was different from that of United States market. After the Great Depression of 1929 both Cheramy and its parent, Houbigant, suffered and had to discontinue certain lines and to limit the product range.
