Séraphin-Médéric MIEUSEMENT (French, Gonneville-la-Mallet 1840 - 1905 Pornic)

Séraphin-Médéric MIEUSEMENT, born March 12, 1840, in Gonneville-la-Mallet, and died September 10, 1905, in Pornic, is a French photographer of historical monuments and religious buildings. Séraphin-Médéric MIEUSEMENT was a photographer from the age of nineteen with the architect Félix DUBAN in charge of the restoration of the Château de Blois. From 1861 to 1863, MIEUSEMENT worked with Charles de SOUANCE, photographer in Ballan, Indre-et-Loire, as operator. On September 23, 1859, Félix DUBAN describes him in a letter as a very skillful and very kind boy. This recognition encouraged Séraphin-Médéric MIEUSEMENT to establish himself as a photographer in Blois, where he worked, first with PILLON in 1863, then alone in 1864. There he met Émile POUVE. He exhibited in London in 1862 and at the Société française de photographie in 1864. After having offered his services for the first time in vain, he began to work for Historical Monuments from 1875. In 1878, following an order, he presented around fifty photographs of monuments being restored to the Universal Exhibition, where he obtained a silver medal. With his title of photographer attached to the Commission des Monuments Historiques, MIEUSEMENT will strive to win other markets. He was admitted to the French Photography Society and became president of the Loir-et-Cher Artistic Excursion Society. In 1881, he deals with the Ministry of Worship to reproduce the cathedrals of France. In 1883, he entered into an agreement with the Commission des Monuments Historiques, a contract which granted him the commercial exploitation of part of the photographs of Historic Monuments. In 1885, he settled in Paris, 13 rue de Passy. He then worked throughout France, notably in 1887-1888 and then in 1895 in Provence. In 1890, he sold his concession as a photographer of historical monuments to his son-in-law Paul ROBERT. In 1893-1894, he was on a mission in Algeria for the Ministry of Worship then retired to Blois. He died in 1905 at the hospice in Pornic.
