C.H. Kühne & Zonen (Dutch, 1903-1973)
Label "C.H. Kühne & Zonen / Hofbontwerkers / 's-Gravenhage" (C.H. Kühne & Zonen / Court Fur Workers / The Hague)
Manufacturer of couturier clothes (f.e. Christian Dior fashion house, Jacques Fath fashion house) and for his own fashion house C.H. Kühne in The Hague, The Netherlands. The Royal Family was a regular customer at Kühne.
The fashion house C.H. Kühne at first was located at Hoogstraat 23. The new building on the corner of De Plaats and Kneuterdijk was opened in 1909, which can still be found there with the famous name high on the facade.
Kühne sold couture of its own design, but also Parisian couture through a licensing system. This meant that Kühne purchased original patterns from Parisian designers and was able to tailor them in detail for his own customers. Therefore the fashion house employed many seamstresses and designers. The company closed in 1973, when many traditional couture houses had a hard time because fashion became much younger and faster.
Items C.H. Kühne and Sonen are in the collections of Gemeentemuseum The Hague; the Royal Collections, The Hague; The Rijksmuseum.
