House of Yteb (French (Russian origin), Paris 1922 – 1933)

YTEB was a fashion house opened in Paris by Russian emigrée and operated from 1922 to 1933. “Yteb” meance "Betty" but spelled backward, without the double “t,” and referenced to the house’s founder, Betty BUZZARD, born Baroness Elizaveta Bertoldovna HOYNINGEN-HUENE (Elizabeth HOYNINGEN-HUENE), who was descended on her father’s side from an ancient baronial Baltic family. (Later she became by Baroness WRANGEL, then BUZZARD). Mrs. BUZZARD was the daughter of Anne LATHROP of Detroit and the equerry of Tzar Nicholas II. She was reared in the royal court at Saint Petersburg, where she was named maid-of-honor to Empress Marie. In 1918, after the family’s property was expropriated during the Russian Revolution, they fled to safety in London. Like many of the Russians who fled during the Revolution (including her brother, photographer George HOYNINGEN-HUENE), she entered the fashion industry in order to provide her no-longer-wealthy family with income. In 1922 she relocated to Paris, the center of the fashion world. Her house flourished for over 10 years by lending a uniquely Russian flavor to 1920s fashion. Her shimmering gown features metallic thread embroidery worked by Russian émigré embroiderers. The fashion house was located 14 rue Royale in Paris. In 1925, the house had a branch in Cannes at 4 rue du Grand Hotel.
