Johanna SULZMANN (German, Esslingen 1888–1971)

Johanna SULZMANN (1888–1971), originally from Esslingen, came to Oberndorf at the age of eleven and was the first woman in the wider surrounding area to receive an academic education in painting in Stuttgart and Akademie der Bildenden Kunste Munchen (ca. 1920s). Already during her studies she received several awards. In 1933 she was able to show three pictures in a large exhibition in Florence. Religious motives, still lifes, portraits and landscapes were the spectrum of her work. Johanna Sulzmann, according to Laufer, had to live from selling her paintings, which was not always easy. With a handcart she drove over land to offer her paintings. Just as she remained faithful to her way of life, this "artist of the lost generation" remained true to her art.
