Alexey BRODOVITCH (American (born Russian), near Minsk 1898 - 1971 Le Thor)

Alexey BRODOVITCH was a Russian origin photographer, designer, artist. He was born 1st of May 1898 near Minsk. He studied in St. Petersburg, arbitrarily participated in the 1st World War. After graduation, he was drafted into the army, participated in battles in the civil war, was wounded in battles and sent to a hospital in Kislovodsk. There he met his future wife Nina. In 1918 they emigrated from Russia, first to Istanbul, and then to Paris, where they married in 1920. Alexey BRODOVITCH as an artist made, his debut with DIAGHILEV, getting a job as a decorator. BRODOVITCH designed posters, photographed dancers, created interiors. He also drew furniture sketches and fabrics for Martine a department of Paul Poiret Fashion House. Alexey was not afraid to experiment, and it was thanks to this that he achieved success. He often wins art contests by drawing posters and won many awards and medals. In collaboration with the typographer Maximilien VOX, a talented artist began to design book covers. Along with this, he drew a poster for Martini, created advertisements for Le Printemps and Bon Marche. In 1928, Alexey BRODOVITCH founded his own art studio - "L’Atellier A.B.", continued to create book covers. In the 1930s, he moved to the USA, where he began to teach photography and design. In 1933, this genius of design founded the first in the USA professional school of design and photography - "Design Laboratory". He taught in French since he spoke English poorly. In 1934, Alexey BRODOVITCH began working in Harper's Bazaar magazine. He transformed the fashion catalog into a full-fledged informational publication on culture and fashion. Photos replaced the drawings and along with it the texts appeared. In 1966 he returned to France and five years later died there.
