Bernhard ZICKENDRAHT (German, Bad Hersfeld 1854-1937 Berlin)
Bernhard Zickendraht (born April 14, 1854 in Bad Hersfeld, † April 25, 1937 in Berlin) was a Berlin portrait and genre painter.
Bernhard Zickendraht began his studies at the Kunstakademie in Kassel, where he received the large silver medal, and continued it at the academies in Berlin and Paris.
After graduating, he settled in Berlin, where he soon became known as a portrait and genre painter. In the period from 1883 to 1910, he exhibited his works at the exhibitions of the Berlin Academy, where he was appointed professor.
Zickendraht portrayed u.a. the Crown Prince Wilhelm of Prussia (1932, Cecilienhof) and the Baron Karl Ludwig von Biedenweg (1916, Lippe State Museum). He portrayed film actress Pola Negri in 1922, even before her American career began.
His portraits of lovely young ladies earned him wide popularity and appeared in print in the form of postcards. Many of his works are in art collections in the United States.
